I would like to zero out only my startup partition, but the OS 9 version of drive setup won't let me. The OS X version will let me, but it has diabled the checkbox that allows me to install OS 9 later

    what shall I do?

BTW, this is on my iMac that runs the server. I'd rather not have to back up everything on the server to discs (26 GB not already backed up)

    mmmm...

i would think you could use os x to format the partition and then boot to an os 9 install disk and install os 9 onto that partition from there. both operating systems use HFS+. i don't see why you couldn't do it this way. os x might not let you install classic onto that partition for some reason, but os 9 should install by itself from the cd. i think!

you might want to post on apple's discussion forums about this.

    a) if this is your carracho server, why put OS 9 on it at all?
    b) which version of OS 9 do you have on that installer CD?
    c) are you trying to "zero data" or just reformat the partition?

    a) because it's not just for the server
    b) 9.1, but I used a 9.2.1 version of Drive Setup
    c) zero

Well, I just formatted it using the OS X version of Drive Setup, since there was no option to format one volume on a drive in the OS 9 version. I didn't check the OS 9 box since it was greyed out.

OS 10.2 sucks for me. IE is slow for rendering and even the magnification animation for the dock is jerky.

I copied my OS 9 system folder back on to the startup drive and it works fine. oh well.

I also installed OS 10.2 on my G4 tower (with a Radeon). It won't save my settings for the system, and IE refuses to run. Sherlock crashed. I think I'll stick with OS 9 for a while

general system instability? first i would download updated OS X drivers for the radeon... maybe put back in the 16MB rage pro temporarily to see if that fixes the problem. if it's not the video card then i would start removing / unplugging any other 3rd party hardware one by one.

is it a clean install of 10.2? if not you might check the apple discussion forums for people with similar problems... there may be a program that causes problems. also, i think you can boot the OS X CD and install over the top without losing any files or programs, you might try that.

    Install 10.2. Don't install 10.2.1. Wait for 10.2.2.

Same here, but I've found 10.2 to be a bit less reliable than 10.1.5. The Finder crashes periodically for me, it never did before.

here's the rundown of the problems
    • dock items revert to default configuration
    • most system settings revert to default
    • IE won't open because it says I don't have a good enough computer
    • lots of unexpected quitting of a variety of programs
I'll try the discussion forums, I couldn't find anything on the tech db

the problem must have been an invisible OS X file that was corrupted. I reformatted and now it works well.
