    It begins...

Kier and Mike, former lead developers of vBulletin, are making a new forum application. They left vBulletin about 13 months ago.

I have been demoing the front end for a few weeks, and I saw a private demo of the backend. The software is very powerful. I will likely convert this forum once the software goes gold.

Are they planning to have the same basic pricing/licensing system?

Probably. Though they haven't made an official announcement about licensing / pricing yet. But I heard it will likely be a yearly renewal system similar to what vBulletin used to have. And they plan to have a discount for early adopters.

They expect to have a version ready for release by the end of summer.

Could you go into detail about what makes it superior to vB? We're still having a bitch of a time upgrading to vB4, and I wouldn't mind moving to something better.

Yup, for the $100 24-hour sale price. Haven't installed it yet, I'm a busy busy man. I'll be importing a 1.1M post, 45K member forum, when I eventually get around to it.

I got it too. Been using it in a test environment, testing the importer. The software is quite impressive from a coding and development perspective. It's still limited on features but they are working on that now that the core software is complete.

The code is very different. I will have to rewrite some stuff. Some major differences are the MVC framework, the template system, and the HTML presentation.

The MVC framework of xenForo is highly object oriented as opposed to function oriented like vBulletin. It's a better way to program but it will require some extra effort to port my code.

The template system in xenForo is very different. Templates can include each other and can make use of logical constructs like foreach loops. This greatly simplifies the code but it will require some changes to my code.

The HTML presentation uses divs and heavy CSS. That is not to say that I can't still use my beloved tables which I rely on heavily for the WoW style, but ideally I should try to use the new presentation.

    ...

I will probably take the opportunity to make a D3 site based on xenForo. The time has almost come to change games and it will be easier to start new on some things like the style.

As usual the forum will persist. xenForo has a killer import script.

I have been working with the software for over a year now. I have been leveling up my CSS ability and learning the code.

I plan to convert the site after 1.1 goes gold (probably a few months). 1.1 has some features I need like custom profile fields. I have made good progress on converting the WoW style.

With D3 turning out to be a disappointment I find myself not very motivated to convert the forum. The conversion is easy and I have done several test runs. The custom development is what takes time and motivation.

I have been working on a lot of other forums and helping people with their own customizations. Over the last couple months I have continued to develop my "Nodes As Tabs" addon for XF which has proven to be very popular:

    http://xenforo.com/community/resources/nodes-as-tabs.9/

You might even call it a CMS of sorts.
