The day of purging has finally arrived, and the dupe exodus has begun! With the advent of patch 1.06 one of my skull grasps has left me! Jake you were right in taking the non-duped sword, and I'm so happy right now because the value of my legit exec probably just doubled! In the words of Akara, "Finally we may rejoice!"

    Patch 1.06 Has Been Released
    GFraizer
    Blizzard Entertainment

Simply connect to Battle.net to download the patch. We will post
    the standalone version of this
patch on our FTP site as soon as it's available.

    Improvements
    - Updated Battle.net's Terms of Service agreement. It can now be
    accessed
without having to create a new account.
    - Further optimized client to server communication.
    - Fixed copy-protection for various CD, DVD and CD-R drives.

The Diablo II Realms now scan characters for duplicate items. If
a player is found to have more than one of the same item, the
duplicate items will be deleted leaving just one of that item.

    Common Questions:

Q: Why have some of my items of a certain type vanished?
A: Character files were scanned for duplicated items. All
duplicate items but one were deleted.

Q: What items were selected for deletion?
A: All rare and unique items were scanned for duplicates.

Q: Why did Blizzard Entertainment only delete some of the dupes,
    and not every dupe?
A: Blizzard Entertainment wants to maintain an enjoyable and
balanced play experience for every user. To that end, we removed
all but one duplicate item. We're making an effort to protect
those players that legitimately traded for those items.

Q: Are all methods of duping stopped?
A: All known methods of duping have been fixed. We will
continue to monitor the Diablo II realms for duplication exploits
    and fix them as needed.

Q: Where can I report hacks or exploits?
A: You can send your reports to hacks@bli

What about duplicate uniques you pick up in the realms? How do they distinguish between, say, two unique Gill daggers and duped ones?

I called Blizzard about the deleting thing...

The tech said the only items to be deleted (leaving only 1 of the item in your possession), are the DUPED items... NOT the legitimate "multiple" uniques people have gathered.

In other words, all the duped items....if you had 2 on a character,...now you have 1. If you have 20 SOJ's, you still have 20.

Forgot to ask him it if scans accounts or characters....if multiple dup's are recogognized by character or account, I'm not sure...

well, that means I prolly lost one of my skull grasps. My mule has 4 stones. We'll see if those got nuked. I have two worms and two frosts on my second mule. I'll have to see what happened when I log on tonight.

I must say I'm glad Blizzard finally stepped in and did something about this. I'm sure there will be several people that will be pissed because they lost all their stuff, but it's for the better.

As long as your stones, worms, and frosts are legit, they shouldn't get nuked. My necro has two stones, they are both still there. There is some way that B.net knows that two uniques of the same type are not dupes. There is probably some kind of time and date stamp buried in the code for the item, so it can tell whether two uniques that look the same are dupes or not.

Although the uniques are unique, their id code to bnet is not unique. I wouldn't be surprised if every rare and unique that is dropped is assigned a unique code. Two duped items would have the same code and could be easily tagged for deletion.

There was a Blizzard Rep guy in the Amazon channel the day after the patch, basically banning people for cussing their heads off or spamming, and I had a little (whispered) conversation with him about the game, and he was pretty disappointed with the fact that Stones of Jordan have become the "currency" that they are. He was also disappointed with the outrageous prices on top of the line weapons such as 150+ VF gothic bows, 330+ lances, 160+ -40% execs etc., they were hoping that by the time you hit level 50 or so you'd have one of these "godly" weapons from trading, which is why if you don't you can sometimes run into trouble (except in the case of lancers :p, 200+ and with mastery you're doing 1000+) with not doing enough damage, especially in the Amazon's bow case (which I've definately felt!). I didn't really get to ask many questions because he had some serious monitoring to do with all the sh*t flooding that channel. I never got on to the subject of dupes directly, but the outrageous prices for these "godly" weapons is probably a result of duping, inflation due to legitimacy.

if he was so disappointed, then they shouldnt have made the Godly itmes so rare. the chances of finding a Dual Leech ring from a monster are, like, 10^(-5000000)! so its really Bliz's fault. besides, if everyone had a superitem then the whole Bnet economy would be nonexistent.
