Attempted assassination of Saddam Hussein by 40 or so BGM-109 Tomahawk cruise missiles. Supposedly he will address the nation within the hour. Keep in mind that almost all his addresses are pre-taped for security reasons related to live broadcasting.

ya, I just read about the "bunker buster" bombs. They started bombing sights a little before 8pm. 6 sites that housed weapons or supplies near the borders were hit, to prevent them from being used against the troops on the border.

Real bombing started at about 9:30.

That would be kinda funny if we actually hit him the first try.

"Bunker Buster" is the most retarded nickname I've ever heard :D.

The aforementioned is technically referred to as the GBU-27, of the Paveway II series of laser guided munitions. All members of the Paveway I, II, and III series have some level of armor penetration, but the GBU-24/B, GBU-27A/B, and GBU-31/B have the most shielded warheads.

The GBU-27's were dropped by F-117A Nighthawks ("Stealth Fighters").

Enough digression, this thread is important.

There's a lot of discussion at www.al-neda.com about the war now.

Unfortunately, most of the people there, for either side of the spectrum, are somewhat less poignant than we're used to on these boards. A lot of "religious" rhetoric (more like hate-rhetoric if you ask me; I like to consider myself a religious person).

im gonna have to guess that the taped broadcast last night was taped from a while go.... as a premptive measure, i would guess 1 week or so before we started bombing...

I figure we are saving a lot of kurds and other innocent people from saddam

I agree it was most likely pre-recorded, but since he mentions the date as March 20, I'm thinking he taped it shortly after Bush's ultimatum. They are testing the tape to see if it's even him, some think it could be a double, in which case they want to find out for sure when it was made. If it was made after the bombing of the bunker in Baghdad, it's possible it was made by a double to hide the fact that Saddam might have been injured or killed even. Unlikely, but intelligence did show top officials would be at the bunker. If recorded before the strikes, then it's still possible he was in the bunker or is hunkered down somewhere else.

Did you see Baghdad last night, it was EMPTY. Most civilians left.

30 countries have offered us military support. They don't want to be named yet, I suppose they want to let us take the heat.

Fine as along as the job gets done. Thousands of people have been gassed by the man, tortured, raped. What's your solution, just let him keep doing it? Has noone figured out diplomacy does not work with this man.

Soon enough we'll find out for sure if we were right in our stance. I'm of course hoping I believed in the right side and that relations with Europe can be mended. If we were wrong, well, then we'll come to that when it's time. But I truely believe we did everything to prevent war in the last 12 years and are now doing everything we can to prevent needless deaths. The quicker we get the job done, the less people die on both sides. And many Iraqi soldiers are ready to surrender, which means even less bloodshed.
