I turned up all video detail settings in War3 to max and the game plays at same speed even in large battles. Probably the CPU that causes the game to lag in major battles. Kind of interesting really, considering that the 733 is one of the higher model chips and the recommended speed is 600.

there is a huge performance difference between the 733 2MB and the 933 2MB DDR. not sure why, maybe the DDR cache is what does it.

The bottlenecks for all of the latest macs is the processor. The CPU can't feed the GPU enough data quick enough to allow it to operate at its max speed.

That's why putting a geforce 4 in an imac is retarded.

The QuickSilver 733 has no 2MB. Just 256kb L2 cache like most older AMD chips which do fine. I don't think it's as much the cache as it is other things. I know people with simular MHz PCs with simular cache settings that get far better speed. I also read about people with 800MHz Quicksilvers without L3 who do far better.

Like I care though. I'm dumping Apple as soon as I can. They don't have clue about their hardware and haven't for a long while. When they wake up and build more reasonable systems with better driver support, I'll be back for general use. I will however use their laptops. PC battery life sucks. Apple is great but I just refuse to put up with this until they shape up.

Yeah, sorry. I didn't forgot that I switched forums but I guess it's hardware too.

the "before quicksilver" (i forget the case name) 733 had 2MB of cache, then they jewed it up with the quicksilver. they stripped the L3 out of it so they could sell it cheap and make it the low end model.

According to both my memory and http://www.apple-history.com/quickgallery.html it had 1MB. The memory was also 1/3rd speed of cpu. Wasn't it the Graphite case?

yep, you're right. it's the The PowerMac G4 (Digital Audio).

wtf? the low end DA models had 1MB L2 @ 1:2. but the high end DA models had 256K L2 @ 1:1

seems weird. anyways, the DA 733 had more L3 than yours.

the L2 on the low end was backside, the L2 on the high end was on-die
