The fan keeps stopping on my video card which causes games to crash. In addition I am scared it is going to do the inevitable "burn" to my card. Just wondering if any of you have ever taken off the heatsink and fan for a radeon 9800 pro. I heard you can get it off okay but putting it back on is a bitch. Any other ideas? (I have tried cleaning it as well as I could from the outside.) Buying a new graphics card is not an option so dont suggest it. lol.

Don't know how to do it, but it sounds like a good cleaning and oiling could be all it needs.

HSF's are disposable. Just get a new one for like $20-$30.

Is your fan full of dust? The bearing might be gone as well. You should be able to pick up a similar fan for like $0.25 online somewhere.

Also, you might want to call the company and ask if they could send you a replacement fan. One of my friends in College did that.

Building one could be a fun project but in general it's actually cheaper to buy one for what you get. There are all sorts of thermodynamics involved, not just any finned surface will work.

Replacing the heat sink on any chip will require you to scrape off the old thermal paste and apply a new layer of, say, Arctic Silver. I looked into watercooling and that requires expensive heat exchangers and Peltier plates, so just replacing the HS is probably your best bet. Coolermaster makes some nice ones.
