My friend just bought a computer off eBay. It didn't come with any restore CDs and it is password protected. Is there a way of changing/finding out the password without using lophtcrack or something like that? It's Win XP.

My brother knows more about this than me. He doesn't know of any other way besides lophtcrack.

I assume he has tried emailing the seller and asking for the password/restore discs?

They don't have them, I think it was actually one of those drug-seizure auctions instead of eBay.

I guess I'll have to go with lophtcrack, but it's been a long time since I used it and I was never very good at it. :/

Is there something wrong with wiping and reinstalling? It's not like you'd need anything that was on there in the first place.

    maybe...

I'm just thinking out loud, but if you have access to a windows server and the computer was added to the domain through Active Directory, then GPO would override the local privileges and give you access to log on and then you could reset the administrator password.

Of course, have you tried logging in as adminstrator, no password. You'd be amazed how many computers in our company would let you in like that.

Also, you could try here. http://home.eunet.no/pnordahl/ntpasswd/ requires a floppy drive though.
