    O.k. This is my problem:

I have a Mac G3 450 (Blue and white) with plenty of RAM running on OS 9.2. I did have a rage 128 graphics card installed but recently replaced it with a Radeon 7000 PCI Card.Everything works great accept for my Apple DVD player. Apparently there is a decoder card on the Rage 128 (no I can’t take it off and put it on the Radeon, at least to my knowledge) that allows you to play DVD’s. I have also been told by many people to do a software update and perhaps that would solve problem......no dice
So my last step was to go to the apple site and try and update it manually (my apple DVD player is version 1.3) unfortunately 2.7 needs an AGP slot in the computer. And guess what.. I don’t have one. Which is why I bought a *^$ #*!!$ PCI card to begin with. Well there you have it.... any ideas

    just in case

Also, I think someone may have told me that there is a... um certain version of Apple DVD player that doesn't need a decoder.. should anyone have this version, I have a carracho server named joe's garage. Sure would be nice if this version ended up there... sure would.

Upgrading to 10.1.5 should solve it... try that unless you did... uhh... didn't Apple say that they fixed this somewhere?

    as i said in my e-mail... ;)

Blue and White G3s with DVD players use hardware decoding. the decoder is on the original graphics card. when you replaced the video card you lost your hardware decoding ability. so you need to upgrade your DVD player app to a version that uses software decoding instead. the current app is still looking for that hardware decoder card which isn't there anymore. :)

The Apple DVD player for OS 9 can use software decoding otherwise it wouldn't work with the newer G4 systems that were coming out without a hardware version. Perhaps your system settings are setup for hardware decoding and even a more recent version of Apple DVD player won't use it because it also looks to these settings. You might want to consider formating your hard drive and reinstalling if nothing else works. That way the Apple DVD player will be setup from scratch to use software decoding.

Just a theory, I've never actually tried something like this.

software decoding may require an AGP slot, in which case you might be stuck with your old video card if you want to watch movies.

G4s use a newer version of the same software that uses software decoding. there are special versions of that software for hardware decoding systems.
