The NDA just ran out on the new p4 533. Running at a top 2.53ghz on a 0.13µm fab and quad pumped 133mhz fsb, the processors are raping everything left and right. Including AMD. Too bad they cost twice as much as an AMD processor.

Yes, by summer the p4b chips will have scaled up to 3ghz and Apple will unveil the new g4s! 1.2ghz with DDR! OMG OMG OMG OMG

There's articles on it at www.hardocp.com and www.anandtech.com

They should have put a G4 in the benchmarks so we could have all had a good laugh.

Except the crappy pipeline but their brute force makes it a mute point.

What I find funny is how many people think they need this kind of speed when in reality games don't even need 1GHz yet. RTCW says G3 500MHz and on the PC side, P2 350 MHz... Course those are minimums but you get the idea. Basicially I'm saying, the speed is great to have but saying that you "need" that speed is funny. A P3 1GHz with a nice graphics chip still does quite well for gaming these days. Having said that, if I were to buy a PC I'd get an AMD XP 2100+ or P4 1.8 GHz at least. ;)

The new P4s don't really concern me... It's what Intel might release next. I really like the FSB on the current machines. :D

Unless yours be slower, I feel my sub-GHz G4 733 QuickSilver aging more. That's it! As soon as I get the money, I be getting a new DP 1 GHz+ DDR Mac w/ all the trimmings!

I think my G4 400 is officially old and decrepit.

The real Northwoods are starting to arrive. (The last chip that I worked on.)

hehe Thought that would getcha. ;)

    (I'm happy with it actually)

It's only slow to me on a visual level. (MHz/RAM-wise)

Give me some better nVidia/ATI drivers, plus faster RAM next time and I'll not complain one bit. (Jedi Outcast wouldn't hurt either.)

When they're getting beat in just about every area of performance, you know that it's time for a new and faster chipset. Hopefully they'll deliver by next winter... Though of course summer would be nice.

you are right. my 1 gig p3 system does great for games. why would i ever need something like my brother's 2.5 gig p4 system that plays all games more than twice as fast as mine?

Your topic would be better stated as Apple is not first anymore in the After Effects program. Actually, they're lagging behind in After Effects performance.

Actually, After Effects is not fully Altivec accelleracted.

As for the new P4, I am quite dissapointed. All the benchmarks show less than 10% performance increase. Looks like Intel is losing it.

But since it cant run the best OS, I am not really interested. (just darwin isnt enough)

Never ever ever force the programmer to optimize their code. That is the single worst thing a processor manufacturer can force. It is the job of the processor's onboard decoder to handle that.

i don't konw about the onboard decoder thing. i agree with haite that is isn't realistic to expect all software makers to optimize their code for something like altivec or that pentium thing (brain fart, can't remember what it's called). however, the mac platform is somewhat unique... the operating system itself is optimized for altivec. i'm not sure how this translates over to apps under OS X though.

Yes it isnt realistic to expect all software makers to optimize their code for altivec, or multithreaded for multi-processor systems, or graphic accelerated or whatever. That isnt what we are saying.
