That's pretty cool, but why would Sony want to collaborate with those guys? It would seem as if they'd lose money. And how are they going to do all this without breaching any patents?
The PS2 is sold at cost, they make money off the games.
i can get cost on ps2 cos i work at compusa. retail is $299, cost is $295
I think it still costs Sony more to manufacture them. Or, at least it did when they were new.
The tactic for alot of game console companies is to sell the hardware at an initial loss to stay competitive and build up user base (hey, maybe Apple could do that..), then make it back with game licenses and sales.
I think I read the XBox is one of the first consoles where you can just go out, make a game for it, and commercially sell it. You don't need to go to MS to get a license to sell games for it.
Apple talks about digital hub plans, but MS is already moving on that with the XBox, and has made failed attempts in the past (WebTV).
actually, they sell at below cost. I think they lose $50 to $100 per console.
