I think Apple wants the PowerMac towers to be high-end only. iMac is supposed to cover low and mid-range. Unfortunately Apple's $3500 Mac performs like a $1700 PC. I will admit Apple's current desktops are overpriced, but things could change. Wouldn't it be nice if Apple offered a $1000 iMac with 1GHz G3/G4 and CD-RW. How does $1500 for a Super Drive model sound? $2000 for a 1.2GHz G5/Super Drive bundled with 15" LCD tempt you?

While such a line-up in extremely unlikely, it is not impossible.

Damit! Who am I kiding? I know it won't happen! :(

bah! g4 cube didn't fit in anywhere. it was more expensive than the towers for what you get.

im not sure a "Middle" product is a good idea, especially when the iMacs and the towers seem to mesh at their respective high-low ends.

Take the current g4 tower formfactor and turn that into the middle end. Now make an all new enclosure with actual expansion bays and better system monitoring. More space, and better support for high end server style solutions such as raid and server farming.

i dont think i'll ever understand what people are doing with all these expansion bays.. i mean.. why do you need TWO optical drives? and if you absolutely HAVE to have one.. get a firewire drive.

OMFG, I have over 100 cds of games and apps nevermind all my music cds. I play over 20 games regularly, do you know how unbelievably annoying it is to always have to change cds? I have 4 cd-roms at the moment and I still find that not enough.

How do you copy cds? How do you listen to a music cd while you're playing a game with another cd? How can you stand constantly switching the Giants, starcraft, red faction, diablo 2 and baulder's gate 2 cd all the time?!?!

IT'S INSANE! I've got another 2 drives that would work perfectly fine in my tower if Apple wasn't so retarded.

The iMac is targeted towards people like you. You don't need expansion. I do!

    iMac = tower
one optical drive = one optical drive
no floppy drive = no floppy drive
    1 hard-drive bay = 6 hard drive bays
    2 ram slots = 4 ram slots
no zip drive bay = ONE INSANELY ****ING USELESS STUPID PIECE OF ****ING SHIT ZIP DRIVE BAY

My God, I want to kick the ass of the engineer who decided to make a zip drive bay. You can get a tray to add to your internal zip drive to make it fit a optical drive bay. You can't adjust an optical drive to fit a zip drive bay. I mean, come on!

Apple went form over functionality...again! Instead of adding useful expansion they make the tower the shape of a square instead of a rectangle. WHO CARES IF IT'S A RECTANGLE!! I WANT MY EXTRA OPTICAL DRIVE BAYS!!!!!!

    end rant

Similar to a stand-alone CD Player, wouldn't there be some way to have an automatic CD changing system? Just load x number of CD's into some sort of housing device and just throw that in and in some program choose which CD to be automatically inserted into the drive. Maybe it's too complex or too stupid, but I'd like to see it happen.

ok. you're lazy and you dont like swapping your CDs so apple's engineers need to add 5 more CD-ROMs for you... either put your mac in an 8" ATX case or stfu and buy a PC

it really bugs the hell out of me when people complain and complain, waiting for someone to hand them a solution when a solution is right in front of them. BUY A CASE WITH MORE 5.25 BAYS!!!!

I had one of those! but it took so long for the machine to change CDs that it was faster to swap them manualy and if you wanted to take a CD out of the thing good luck! so I returned it and got a plain old 40x

The G4 tower is supposed to be a pro solution. PRO. PRO PRO PRO.
1 drive bay is NOT pro.

And then apple makes os x server. SERVER, servers use many cd-roms so that they can have access to multiple cds.

Apple needs to wake up and either offer a real pro solution, or just drop the pro tag and the server as well.

Duh...let's put a highend video card in a server config. SMART ONE APPLE!
