so says this thing i got from macrumors.com. there's some other stuff in there too.

    - Jaguar server will make it possible to netBoot os X and remote administration. - the factory which will manufacture new the G5 microprocessor will be in Grenoble. It is not finished yet.
    - G5 will not even be available until the end of 2003, on the other hand it really exists and runs reliably. The manufacturing is, however, not very reliable in terms of loss and is too expensive for the moment.
    - G4s will evolve -- but very little -- it is motherboards using Hypertransport (that of Xserve) and cache systems which will evolve.
    - the new models of motherboards do not support os 9, it is thus finished definitively on the next machines.
    - the core following of jaguar will be clusterisable on the system level... one then supposes a very evolutionary machine out of turn of xServe. (On a standard 42u rack, 39 Xserve dual 1Ghz machines and an xserve Raid with 1,68 To, using only one screen)
    - For the first time of the history of Apple, a standard machine is made with recycled materials (Aluminum, etc) (??? not sure of this translation ???)
    - The system composes of a main server and a slave server. The xServe slave autoswitchs to a Master, (in the event of breakdown of the Master), reswitches automatically when the solution of the breakdown is found! the user sees nothing there, only the administrator receives a message of breakdown of the first server.

    re: g5. suck
    re: jaguar. weeee!
re: hypertransport. the xServe uses hypertransport?
    re: recycled materials. :wtf:

ok so i'm like wOOt beowulf cluster of xServes :hump:

That's ripped from a french mac site I read earlier. MOSR is just regurgitating baseless crap from lesser known sites. It's pretty unfounded. Being ripped apart at the AI forums.

The Beowulf movie isn't too bad. I watched it a years or so ago. It's kind of like every Christopher Lambert movie after Highlander.

It's sort of a moder/goth/tech version of the movie. Don't expect it to be like the book.

    I'll post something on topic...

How much higher can apple clock the G4s? The architecture is definitely showing its age, and needs replacement now, not late '03. It's not bad technology, but if Apple wants to stay competitive, they need something newer and faster. Lets just hope this story isn't legit.

Who cares how high they can clock it? the jump from the old 400-500 MHz G4 chips up to the 733s showed me that adding more steps to the pipeline and cranking up the MHz doesn't do sh1t for performance.
Just squeeze what MHz you can out of it and work on the other bottlenecks in the hardware for now until the G5 is ready.

when the p4s came out everyone was saying how much they sucked and that intel focused on MHz but actual performance sucked because of the architecture. well, my brother is running a 1.6 p4 overclocked to 2.5 and there is definately a performance difference that comes with those extra MHz. steve says MHz don't matter, i say he's wrong.

Once you get the p4 past 2ghz it starts owning everything left, right and center.

And while you may want apple to focus on performance and not mhz this is what everyone is looking for. Sure 5% of computer users know that two computers may have the same performance with a different mhz number but the other 95% does not. So they buy the one with the higher number. Pure and simple.

So you are saying that just maybe those Intel P4 designers had some idea of what they were doing?

    ;)
