Saw this and thought of you, Jake: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/star-trek-tv-series-works-828638
Yep, I remain hopeful. Here is a paste of my full post on facebook. http://www.startrek.com/article/new-star-trek-series-premieres-january-2017 new trek series = win same producer as the reboots = lose not related to reboots = win network-specific online distribution model = lose "The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966." So they claim to be continuing the allegorical tradition of Trek. If they can do that then it will be a good series. But given the reboots I am not sure they understand that tradition very well. For example, Star Trek 2009 was the first Trek movie without any kind of redeeming sociopolitical message. We will see... I am eager for plot details to be revealed. When does the series take place and in what timeline? In general it is extremely important for sci-fi (and Star Trek in particular) to be somehow grounded in current reality lest the viewer is unable to relate and explore the human condition in a plausible future reality. One little niggle from the above quote... "imaginative new worlds." This as opposed to the original "strange" new worlds. This indicates to me a tendency towards science fantasy like the reboots.
Has nothing to do with the new TV series, but seems apropos to put it here anyway: http://theoatmeal.com/comics/plane If you haven't read it already read to the end, it makes sense.
