New powerbooks - now macbooks
Lots of new software stuff
Personally I don't like the name 'macbook' but it'll probably grow on everyone.
So apparently the powerbook is midrange now. Seems weird that the high end laptop and low end desktop went intel. Although now that I wrote it, it doesn't.
Yeah, saying macbook feels awkward, at least since it's so new. An awkward name for 4x speed (supposedly) seems like decent trade to me though .
Before Mactels, the G5 was 4x faster than everything. I don't believe them.
Feel your mind turn to jelly before the awesome power of the reality distortion field.
Actually I believe that the intel chips are maybe twice as fast as the old powerpc processors. Those were overhyped, everyone knew they were slower than what Apple said.
Even in all of apples benchmarks, which may or may not have any meaning in the real world, they range from 2x to 4x faster, it's just the 4x one that gets put in big bold letters. Still quite an improvement though.
the powerbooks may very well be that much faster, going from a single G4 to a dual core chip 2 generations ahead is a huge leap.
ALTIVEC GIGAS FTW
My new iMac will ship on the 18th - hopefully.
I don't really care how much faster it is than the previous one, I know it will be way faster than what I'm using now.
The real question is, are they faster than the dual core G5s already in the high end towers? And if so, how much?
macbook is a lame name
I agree... sounds like something for school. "Don't forget your macbook, Billy!"
Arrrggghh. My iMac is delayed - for a week.
Now shipping Jan 25.
Dude my uncle got a Mac G5 with the huge monitor and everyting, his company gave it to him. Its damn finez0rz :O
Got mine, pretty nice actually. No Classic Support though
Mine actually arrived on the 25th (yesterday) instead of shipping then. Posting from it now. I'm pretty happy. I had a printer driver issue, but Canon has one available for download that is Intel/Mac ready. Works great now.
WoW, using Rosetta is quite a bit better on the new machine than on my old one. I turned everything up to max and got 6-10 FPS in IF - slightly better than my old computer at minimum everything, and that was using rosetta. After turning things to more reasonable settings, still higher than before (I can use shader stuff now!) I was getting low 20's in IF, and hit 45 just outside the doors. Not a speed demon, but this will only get better when Blizzard goes dual binary.
Weren't they demoing a universal binary version of wow at the trade show?
They dropped the OS 9 shell within OS X?
Separate names with a comma.
