    Please help.

Okay, I have a Maxtor 160GB external firewire HD (a newer one - not with the power switch) which locks up quite freqently for no apparent reason. It is almost guaranteed to lock up if I'm editing digital video directly to my hard drive. Also I've recently used this HD as storage for my Carracho server; it worked fine for a couple of weeks, but now locks up when someone tries accessing files on it. The only escape is to power cycle the drive and reconnect. I sent the drive back to Maxtor and was sent out a new one (this one). I've called Maxtor and they gave me some line about if more than one person is accessing it or if you're trying to have the drive perform more than one function it will freeze - but I don't buy it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks!

The only thing I can think of off hand is to run Software Update and make sure you have everything up to date. Maybe check Maxtor's site for updated drivers, though you shouldn't need them for a firewire hard drive in OS X (I assume?).
