pi @ spockirk
you are hitting me with a pi, or what?
I thought it might be that, but it was
I have changed everything (I think) on all 3 servers to reflect the clan name change from M.A.C. to M.S.C. The login name has changed to mscguest (lowercase), but there is still no pass. To find the server on the trackers, search for "sub."
OK, I've been thinking about stopping guest access to the server. The account privs will stay the same, but the mscguest login will change to mscforum and have a password of leto. Another way I might do it is add an account with that login for the forum members and decrease the file access for guests. maybe leave the comedy, anime, mp3, and music vid sections open to guests.
So far, 1 person (that I know of), whiteshark, has actually come to macsubculture.com after hearing about it on the server. He has not been an active participant in any discussions.
I have limited bandwidth. when there are 3 people downloading large files at the same time on each server program (I'm running 3), my speed on the web gets slower than dial-up. If I'm going to go that slow, I'd rather make that sacrifice for people I know.
One of the perks of having a public server is the uploads. I am using OS X exclusively, but most programs people upload are for classic, so I can't use them. I also don't have that much free space left (500MB), so I can't hold much more. If I want something, it's pretty easy to find it myself. All the requests I've ever posted I've fulfilled myself.
I am still debating this change. It's not that hard to do, so it won't take much time to implement it. Tell me what you guys think.
What? You have a server?
blech, I thought it would be easy...
I was trying to go with the guest limiting plan, but I found out that only Hotline has a working custom file section for each login. So far, I have not been successful in creating a special download section for guests in KDX or Carracho.
Put all the files you want guests to have access to in regular folders. Then put all the files that you want members to have access to in a dropbox folder. Now give only members the ability to view the contents of dropboxes.
I knew that trick (and was actually employing it, check the drop box sometime), but I have three levels of access: msc clan member, msc forum member, and msc guest.
the Carracho server help file you posted a while ago just says not to use the custom root folder option. It probably hasn't been implemented yet. I think I'll ask the Carracho tech help people just to make sure.
Since no answer to my inquiry is forthcoming, I took the liberty of changing the privileges of both member accounts to access the dropbox per cow's suggestion. The dropbox is accessible by the member accounts only; the guest account cannot see the files inside.
I was looking through the server log for today, and I actually saw someone from the clan!!!!!! *gasp*
i need to stop by and do some browsing... got any cheats for OS X chess? i can't beat the puter.
