    Is there any chance you'll write a vb 'mod' with the changes you've made on your site? Cos it's easy to get vBPortal, but since you and Cow say vBPortal = suck, and since I think macsubculture.com = win, there must be a way for me to brutally imitate your hard work ;)

    But seriously, any chance?

    the portal isnt' free. it's made by a guy named firefly... he runs vbulletin.org (the vb hacking site). there is no public hack for it since it isn't free. you have to contact him and request it. same with the vb integrated shoutbox. i added some of my own tweaks to the portal. the minicalendar is free and is posted on vbulletin.org. it's all a bunch of little things.

    and yes, vbportal = suck. firefly's portal = win. my portal has no db mods (except the shoutbox has it's own table in my db, but it isn't intrusive at all). it's just a lot of html template tweaking.

    i don't like vbportal because it has lots of db and file mods. the db mods have potential to conflict with future vb upgrades. and all the file mods are a bitch to rehack when you upgrade your scripts during a vb upgrade. my site's hacks consist of stand-alone php files, a block of code added to the middle of my global.php (easy to rehack), and lots of custom templates (not moded vb templates, just my own templates i added for stuff). a much easier approach. many of vbportal's mods are unnecessary IMO.

    Hmz. I've been playing a bit with vBPortal a bit and tend to agree with you. I will never be able to re-hack everything if I upgrade.

    Ah well. I'll mess around some more with vB itself. It will take some time, but I'm sure I can get it the way I want it to be.

    I made a portal somewhat similiar to jake's but without all the paid hack jobs. Unfortunately it doesn't do any of that fancy dynamic stuff like pull articles from a forum, but it suits my needs. See www.macintoxication.com for what I've done. I didn't put the shoutbox in because I didn't want to (it doesn't really suit my site's theme).

    Um, duh... Well, his website does at least, but then I don't cater to such a wide audience.

    Another question to Enslaverboy :)

    How can I add a custom template and actually USE is?

    I added "newtemplate" to the Custom Templates, and the following line to one of the php files

    PHP:
    $templatesused "newpost_postpreview,error_nosubject,redirect_postthanks,email_moderator,emailsubject_moderator,newthread_postpoll,newpost_attachment,newpost_disablesmiliesoption,forumrules,newthread,posticons,posticonbit";
    $templatesused.=",vbcode_smilies,vbcode_smiliebit,vbcode_smilies_getmore,vbcode_buttons,vbcode_sizebits,vbcode_fontbits,vbcode_colorbits,!!!--->newtemplate<---!!!";
    Of course withouth the !!!---><---!!! :D

    But it just won't use it :)

    Can I add a template to my (for instance) New Thread Templates subthingy, or can I get my php files to use the custom template? vBPortal uses P_customtemplate, but I can't see how it addresses them.

    I could be just plain stupid though :)

    towards the top of the script in question (but below the include ('./global.php'); use this:

    PHP:
    eval("\$varname .= \"".gettemplate("template_name")."\";");
    now you can use $varname in whatever template... if this is something that will be used globally then put the code in your global.php file. otherwise put it in whatever file is appropriate for the page it's being used on.

    //edit

    and to have a non vb file output a template just use this in the file:

    PHP:
    <?php

    include("global.php");

      eval(
    "dooutput(\"".gettemplate("template_name")."\");");

    ?>

    Yeah baby, personal certified advice. :bendover:

    Thanks, I'll try it first thing in the morning. It's midnight. Oh wait, I have to work for 10 hours tomorrow. Okay, I'll try it first thing after work, if I haven't died by then.

    Vanilla Sky is a good movie :)

    Never trust parents. They only say that because they don't want you to see Penelope Cruz naked.
