I hear it sucks ass. And that's not Mac enthusiasts telling me that. That's die hard PC people. The only performance benefits over any P3 or AMD chip are seen in Quake 3... that's it!

The P4 is rather dissapointing itself, but its core is designed to reach speeds up to 10GHz. No CPU today has that much head room. The K7 and 7400 cores will hit a ceiling by the end of 2001, while the P4 will continue to streech its legs. K8s and 7500s are what's need to slay the Pentium beast.

read that article carefully. Unless Intel revises several core aspects of the P4, then higher clock speeds will offer diminishing (and I mean hardly any benefit at all) returns. They need to totally rework the P4. And it's rediculus how many stages that chip has. Isn't it like 22 stages or something? K.I.S.S. - Keep it simple stupid.

I think I know why Motorola hasn't taken the G4 as far as it could have yet. They've chosen to design a new chip instead. Even though this may hurt them in the short-run, it will insure they don't go the way of Intel. I think the G5 is going to suprize a lot of people. Combined with a modern OS, Apple may just finish what it started in 1997, a COME BACK!!! Here's hoping. [IMG]

It's just too bad Motorola wasn't more ambitious when they went out and designed the G4. I know they won't make the same mistake again. Hopefully they'll be able to ship a 1GHz G4 by the summer, and get the first G5 out by Q1 of 2002.

Looks like its one of them models only ment to be sold to stupid people who think clock speed is the only thing you need to know to buy a computer

that would be MOST PC people. anyone who buys a Mac usually knows what they're buying.

    I like this quote:

quote:
Intel really went a little too far. They literally stripped the processor bare and tried to use
brute force clock speed to make up for it!

Except the idea doesn't work. Benchmark after benchmark after benchmark shows the 1.5 GHz Pentium chip running slower than a 900 MHz Athlon, and in some cases slower
than a 533 MHz Celeron, even as slow as a 200 MHz Pentium in rare cases.

All you guys are so stupid! It's so obvious! A 1.5GHz processor is faster than one with less MHz (or GHz)! Shesh! Fools!

...this is the attitude of most PC people I talk to that come into CompUSA.

Apparently the p4 has a seriously altered architecture from the p3 that requires programs to be written for it to take advantage of the speed increases.

PC users won't see any serious speed increases from the p4 for a little while because of this (although the amd machines seem to be giving everyone a kicking at the mo).

As far as the Mhtz being a catch-all reference to the speed of a processor arguement is concerned, it has now become wintel's primary marketing source (as anyone who has ever has the "my computer's better than yours" debate will tell you) and one that they will protect - expect huge, meaningless numbers of Mhtz on all wintel machines in the near future.

True, true. It'll be a LONG time before P4 apps arrive. Most Windows programers today STILL write software using 486 compilers. Morons!!! [IMG]

P4 - programs must be optimized.
G4 - programs must be optimized.
OSX - OS will be optimized for G4 passing along the benefits to all carbonized apps.
    Windows - well... ummmm... yeah.

But remember Jakeman, the G4 can run non-optimized apps faster than a G3, while the P4 is slower than a P3 in such cases.

The G4 has everything going for it, except clock speed. Adding some extra pipelines to the core would make a world of difference.

I really miss my G4 now. Seti@home is WAY slow on my 800MHz Duron. Dam brother! [IMG]
