I have a G4 733 Quicksilver with a CD-RW drive but I am interested in watching some DVD movies through my computer. I do not have the money for a Combo drive replacement but I can purchase one of the old 6x DVD drives that came with the old G4 systems. The problem is that I want to keep my current CD-RW drive installed AND use the new DVD drive. If I was to purchase an external firewire enclosure for the DVD drive, would it work correctly with the Apple DVD Player?

    Here's the link:

Thanks in advance for any help.

if the apple dvd software supports firewire as a source, then yes. i don't know it supports that or not.

i dunno :retard: maybe apple will tell you if you call them.

I'll see what the MacAlly people say before calling. Hopefully this works. Maybe I'll just put the CD-RW in the enclosure and the DVD in the comp.

thats what i'd do, but you have to buy a slot loading DVD since you have a QS

Maybe I don't understand this but my Sony CD-RW (Model: CRX-170E Speed: 24x10x40), looks like a tray loading drive to me. When I press eject, a tray comes out and I place the CD on it. Isn't slot loading where you have an open slot and you insert the CD into it? Please forgive my ignorance, just trying to get a handle on the facts.

    Yea, thats correct.

But if your going to mount the DVD drive inside your quicksilver case, does it have a place for the tray to come out. Like Auto said, you might need a slot loading.

the tray on the QS is much slimmer than a standard tray. a full sized one wouldnt fit out the rounded door.

Ah okay. Thanks guys. Maybe I'll just save a little longer and get a Combo drive. Now all I have to do is find a good one.

OWC often has new system pulls of apple OEM parts.. i got my geforce3 there super cheap. i'd check there every once in a while to see if they have any drives.
