Hence the price tag. It still looks like fun.

Looks like the company who aquired the rights to hellgate is relaunching the game:

Runic Games sells out to Perfect World Entertainment following the success of Torchlight:

    I hate sellouts.

ps - torchlight sold 500k copies. That's like $10 million revenue at their price of $20.

    I like this thread.

Now we've got David Brevik working for Marvel to produce another Diablo successor called Marvel Heroes:

    http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2012/...essor-to-diablo-is-a-licensed-superhero-game/

It is free2play in the Diablo style.

What bothers me is how much cred they are giving David Brevik. It's like, "omg he's an ex-norther! Diablo, Diablo, Diablo!" As if no one remembers that he was one of the founders of Flagshit that produced Hellcrap.

Oh yeah. Torchlight 2 was released a couple weeks ago.

I downloaded the demo but I haven't installed it yet. I'll be honest, I see no point in playing a Diablo 2 clone when I have Diablo 2 (which I still play).

I had forgotten about this game until I saw a review linked:

    http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/06/21/marvel-heroes-review

I guess it didn't do very well:

The "schizophrenic" label is interesting since that was a central problem with Hellgate London as well; Hellgate attempted to be a FPS-ARPG; Marvel Heroes apparently attempted to be a MMO-ARPG.

Apparently they also went too far with microtransactions which is a common problem with that money model, where the player feels like they must pay to win regardless of stated intention. That feeling ruins the fun.

I also read that your character model doesn't reflect your gear which is shitty for any ARPG. That would seem to be a conflict when bringing iconic heroes (whose identity is tied to their costume) into an ARPG where gear progression is a central tenet of the genre.

The reviewer also says the game's combat is boring which is another fundamental aspect of ARPGs. They seem to be failing lots of fundamental aspects of their genre.

So I guess the long promised and anticipated Torchlight MMO is not happening.

Let's start by painting a damning picture composed of quotes as I have followed the progress of Torchlight in this thread:

And now, new information indicating the MMO isn't happening:

    http://torchlight.wikia.com/wiki/Torchlight_MMO

Here they indicate some indecision about their previously promised MMO:

And then it is confirmed there will be no MMO:

    http://www.gamespot.com/articles/no-plans-for-torchlight-mmo/1100-6396935/

Back-stepping and contradicting your previously announced MMO plans:

    http://www.shacknews.com/article/75864/torchlight-mmo-on-hold-as-runic-takes-a-break

So the overall picture is this... sell a single player game (Torchlight 1) with the promise that it will become a MMO. Release a sequel (Torchlight 2) which was expected to be the MMO but isn't, with the promise that the MMO will now follow that. Sell your company to a MMO publisher with the apparent sweetener that you will release a MMO soon. Then gradually walk back your MMO promises which have so far fueled your game sales and the sale of the company itself.

So basically they cashed out on players and the company itself by promising something that never happened and will never happen. Pretty smooth.

David Brevik left Gazillion Entertainment (makers of Marvel Heroes) and started his own one man indy company called Graybeard Games:

    http://www.graybeardgames.com/

He wanted to return to programming. Admirable:

    http://massivelyop.com/2016/01/09/david-breviks-new-company-is-graybeard-games-expect-an-rpg/

But so far the only thing he has produced is a puzzle game called Nonomancer:
