i just got this mythos mailer. They are completely redesigning the world to be more persistent and less instanced (see my previous post that describes the instanced world):

This is a good change, though I'm surprised it came this late.

Nice change but it is still fundamentally the same game. I tried making a character but got bored, it is the same game but with mobs that kill you in the town.

There is still no storyline and the quests are not engaging at all. With an mmorpg you have to have something of a storyline to keep people going.

Unconfirmed source claiming that Flagship employees are leaving in droves:

    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/flagship-programmer-says-staff-are-leaving-in-droves

This wouldn't surprise me given all of the bad press they are getting for Hellgate.

Brevik is probably fighting the positive feedback loop of negative vibes the "leaving in droves" claim would kick off (credit Robert Wright of bloggingheads.tv for the term).

Whether or not it is true, the perception that it is would probably make things worse.

Anyways, I have the opinion that such assurances from a CEO are basically automated responses that don't convey much, if any, real information.

It seems like if HR and Accountants left that it'd be no big deal. It seems like programmers and artists leaving would be detrimental to the company. However, based on the information in the two articles I don't see how any conclusion could be drawn.

I may be thinking about this too much. If the games suck the company will fail. Hellgate sucks but mythos seems pretty cool. Mythos might be out before Diablo III also.

Does anyone know what game companies are like? I have the vague idea in my head that they consist of a few programmers, a bunch of artists, and an ass-ton of marketing drones.

And it's done. Flagship is no more if this diii.net inside source is to be believed.

Ironic that a thread named "buh bye diablo" has lived to see this result. Diablo is alive and well and the original exodus has resulted in a failed startup.

    From the source:

    http://www.mythos.com/underground/flagship-studios-still-operating

They are still operating but they laid off everyone except for the managers and the founders... so they basically killed their whole work force leaving only the top people. They are as good as dead even if they say they are still operating.

Flagship North (the Mythos team) is reforming as Runic Games:

    http://www.runicgames.com/

Deja vu... the north company is disbanded by the parent and then the top guys form a new company to continue the action RPG tradition of the original team while riding on the coattails of their past success. Let's hope the similarities stop there.

Interview with Max Schaefer of Runic Games:

    http://www.gamepro.com/article/news...ns-indie-devs-talks-secret-new-game-diablo-3/

    Highlights:

    - their new game will be similar to Mythos.
    - they hope to release a single player version this year.
    - they will expand the game into a MMO a couple years after the initial release.

It concerns me that their new game will be a Mythos clone. I am getting hints that it may share some of the same problems as Mythos. For example, the story:

From my perspective, a big problem with Mythos was a complete lack of direction in many areas including the story, and here they are coding up a new game with only a rough storyline? Cart before the horse.

On the other hand, the fact that they are starting with a single player version makes it not as easy to skimp on the core game which many MMOs tend to do. Hopefully that will force some direction.

PR about a publishing agreement between Runic Games and Chinese publisher, Perfect World:

    Google translation of Chinese PR

    Better English translation

The game will be called Torchlight and it will be an action MMORPG.

The PR contains a brief description of the game:

In addition, two screenshots of the game have been released.

    E3 update for Torchlight

    www.diii.net news post:

    http://www.diii.net/blog/comments/torchlight-e3/

I have compiled the information from all of the linked articles:

    Trailer:

    http://www.diii.net/blog/comments/torchlight-e3/
    (source) http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/69320

    Gameplay vids:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAfbpBS95oE
    http://www.viddler.com/explore/massively/videos/19/

    Release date:
Single player version to be released late 2009. MMO version in 2010-2011.

    Modding tool:

Torchlight will reportedly feature a modding tool to allow players to create their own content. I do not know to what end player content will be used, but it has been hinted that player made content may be incorporated into the MMO version of the game. It sounds like they may be trying to recruit players into the content creation process.

    Pets:

Everyone starts with a pet. Dog or cat type. Pet has inventory space. You can use it as a courier to send back to town while you keep clearing a dungeon (think chicken in dota). Pets can also scout ahead for you. You can go fishing to catch fish for your pet. Different kinds of fish have different effects on the pet.

    Classes:

    - Destroyer
    - Alchemist
    - Unannounced

    Screenshots:

    I'm not gonna rehost these:

    Hype:

Some devs from Blizzard North. Diablo. Blizzard. Diablo. Blizzard.

    _________________________________________

I am concerned about the combination of the MMO game type and player made content. These two things do not work together.

    more Torchlight

Video interview with Travis Baldree at E3. It has gameplay and Q&A:

    http://www.tentonhammer.com/node/69637

    Some highlights:

    - when you beat the game you can get heirlooms and pass them onto descendants. Emphasis on replayability and alts.

    - pet can't die

    - don't like progress bars

    - $20-$30 digital distribution this fall

    - single player and MMO will be completely separate games

    - modding tools are shown in the video

    - you gain fame / prestige which you can spend on stuff

    - blizzard, diablo, blizzard, diablo, blizzard, diablo.

    big torchlight interview

page 1 english - Everything about Runic Games
page 2 english - Story, Gameplay, Skills and Characters
page 3 english - Quests, Items and the Editor
page 4 english - The MMO-Part and the Community

Full interview quoted below. Some highlights:

    • the third class has been revealed to be the Vanquisher. There is no real info yet, but we know the Vanquisher is female. The classes are Destroyer, Alchemist, and Vanquisher.
    • they promise much more content, story, direction, etc in the MMO which will be released sometime after the single player version. And they want to incentivize the MMO players to buy the single player game.
    • the modding tool is what the developers use to make torchlight, so it has total control over everything in the game. You could make yourself god with all the best items if you want.
    • the classes have different skill trees. There is a separate tree for passive skills. There are several learnable skills that any class can learn (ala diablo 1).

It seems to me like they are going to release a stripped down single player game this fall in the hopes of generating revenue to fund their MMO which will be the complete game. If true then I hope that strategy doesn't fail for them like it did for Flagship and Hellgate.

I also don't like the idea of the modding tool. They are basically giving players GM powers in the single player game. There is no faster way to kill interest in a progression game than to give the players full control over the game. The game quickly becomes disenchanted that way. It's not that bad for other types of games like true RP, FPS, and RTS games, but progression games are all about limits and boundaries.

    "The Vanquisher Unveiled"

It looks like the only thing that was unveiled was a description and picture of the class. See below.
