Oh no, how terrible, some jellyfish are disrupting Japan's insane depopulation of the ocean. I totally feel sympathy for them.

I guess they'll have to send out even more trawlers to foreign and international waters to fish illegally.

Please get off your high horse and realize that Japan is not the only country that contribute to depopulation of the ocean.

According to this website it would seem that North America does it's own part in harming the oceans.

    http://www.mta.ca/faculty/arts/canadian_studies/english/about/fisheries/

Yes I realize that they are trying to conserve now that they have almost exhausted their fish stocks.

What Jake posted was just a wow look at the size of that baby and this isn't the place for geopolitical or enviromental debate. I just hate when people point to others for the cause of something without looking at themselves. Thats all I wanted to say. I won't be adding anything else to this thread.

Sorry to butt in, but why not?

We don't know if Cow hasn't looked at himself.... He was just commenting on Japan because that's the country where the jellyfish in the article are.

I'm sorry, I must have missed the transition from a board where a community can discuss whatever to one where we are only allowed to talk about how much gold we farmed in WoW.

Also, in Canada we have a somewhat responsable government which imposes moratoriums on fisheries when the population drops to an unsustainable level (cod, salmon, etc..) compared to Japan, whose government sets up programs under the guise of scientific research that harvest large numbers of poorly understood populations of whales for slaughter.

Jake sucks. This forum sucks. The US sucks. Japan sucks. Canada owns.

No, you have nothing to do with this. I appreciate the work you do to maintain this community. If I didn't like what you did and the place you've established then I wouldn't have stuck around for four years or whatever it is now.

No, I'm responding to him saying that I should only talk about how big the jelly is and nothing else related when it's a thread in the general discussion forum.

No, I was responding to him saying that I shouldn't single out Japan for its fishery practices when Canada and the US do the same (which they don't).

No, I didn't say that. I was responding to him with an example to make the above argument.

    Haha.

Seriously though... I'm gonna be a major hypocrite and say that this has probably overstepped the bounds of negativity on the forums :p

They have a very large mantle but their tentacles are really short so relatively speaking they're harmless.

I'd definitely be more worried about the other less friendly ones down around the equator and australia (box).

In Greece there are about three different kinds of jellyfish that I see: some orange ones that look like miniature versions of those ones in the article. They're harmless. Then there are the transparent ones that look like those plastic toys filled with water that slip in and out of your hands. Also harmless. Then there are the occasional purple ones with fat tentacles. I think those ones sting. The annoying thing is that six years ago I never saw any jellyfish. Now in the summer it's sometimes impossible to swim at some beaches because there might be literally thousands of jellies floating around... usually the transparent ones, but a few years ago it was the orange ones. And I have been to a beach or two that were swarming with the stinging purple ones. I've looked on the internet to find out about these damn things, but I can't find anything! Does anyone know of an online jellyfish database?
