I am having a hard time quantifying one as being better than the other for taking melee hits.
+Def affects your dodge, block and parry skills. Since you are a mage and you don't have parry or block, it would only affect your dodge. And +3 def is only 0.20% dodge or something like that. However, +40 armor isn't that big of a damage reduction bonus either. I think that armor gets diminishing results for damage reduction the higher it goes. So +40 armor to a mage with only 1000 or so armor might be a significant enough difference to choose it over the +def. Just my opinion though.
It's about 1% damage reduction so take the +40 armor, I think.
For a similar question, I can choose between 5 additional stamina, or 97 additional armor. I have the same spell damage boost either way. Also having trouble deciding.
i would go with defense, personally. you'd only get 0.12% dodge out of it, but it also reduces effective critical chance and increases your opponents flat out misses.
What he said. From what I've been told by the warriors, the main reason why druids can't tank as good as warriors even though they have much higher armor is because leather gear don't have +def or very rare if any. It would be insane to have a rogue running around with +def gear since there's so little chance of critting them. It would be like a mage running around with mail armor almost.
Druids suck as tanks only because they can't hold agro
Seriously though, druid armor is sick in bear form. I remember duelling one and critting him for OMG 300 damage with an arcanite reaper. (my average crit was more like, um, 800-1000)
They are a very good class, and the only one of the hybrids I don't hate.
druid tanks also dont have parry or block
