I just built a computer and use Windows 7 Ultimate. I never really used Vista, so I can't really compare. I've been running it for a few weeks now and it appears to be stable, and I haven't had any compatibility issues (again, everything in this box is brand new).

So the computer has trouble waking up from sleep mode (apparently I heard this has been an issue since Vistas)...essentially, it'll wake up to the user screen, I click on the user and it goes into a blue wheel of death that just spins. Have to restart computer.

Other than that, I haven't really had any issues.

Does it look cool, ie. a bunch of effects that bog down older computers?

Not really. In fact, it's minimum requirements are lower than Windows Vista. To me, it looks like a slicker, more modern version of XP with translucent window borders. But it's an expensive piece of software -- I built from scratch so I didn't qualify for the upgrade price, so for the 64 bit version of Windows 7 Ultimate is almost $300.
