No, it would be a huge error, maybe in an expoansion were races split loyalty or something. But hey this is Warcraft, In here you have hate for other races, its a game about war. And if you start having people changing sides what make them stop changing to the winning side just because? Stories should also be unique to those races. For example the undead quests will not be the same as the humans etc... If you want to participate in their quests then make a new char but dont expect to just be able to change and group with the opposite faction just because. How odd would be it that instead of all humans/NE/Gnomes/|Dwarfs bonding together to defeat the foul Horde we find some of our old allies fighting along side them? Now if we had to chance to kill them on the spot perhaphs I would change my mind
But the point is your ruining continuity believe it or not. and if you start mixing up races to level together your ruining the whole point of warcraft in truth

I think that certain races should be able to change factions. Do you think Jaina would allow the undead to mingle with her people? (Actually i never thought Thrall would allow that either...) I also think that if on person should effectively change factions, the original faction should become angry with this person. Like if a orc warrior gained respect with the humans, and effectively changed factions, then the rest of the orcs should despise the orc warrior.

Also class should make a difference... What business would a orc shaman have with humans?

only if it is realy hard! like takes tons of time and tons of quests and when you make it you have ot do a ton more quests to get accaepted, and you can never get fully excpeted unless you do a million quests for them :d

i dont think players should be able to change factions
i could maybe see alliance/horde working together in a large gm event against a common enemy (undead, etc..) but i dont see them working together on an everyday basis

Yes, I'd like to see people with the ability to effectively change factions through several quests of the opposing factions' NPCs, that are only accessible to players trying to change factions. This would add a lot of flexibility and pretty much double the questing posibilities.
When in doubt, kick the Gnomes the f*** out.
Okay, so this Undead Priest molests a child, right?

I disagree about not changing the storyline. If I (as a Troll) saw say...a human, grouping with some other Horde members, I would feel it my duty to report you all and have you outcast. The moment you mess with the factions, roleplaying goes out the window.

Q u o t e:

Are you on crack? You can't roleplay as a member of the opposing faction? Talk about lack of imagination! He's a spy, or maybe he was captured and raised by that faction, maybe he's a mercenary, maybe he was cast out by his old faction and so joined up with the opposing seeking revenge against his old friends... countless roleplaying opportunities, you just have to open your mind. Roleplaying is all about possibilities, when you start eliminating them, THAT is when roleplaying suffers!

A FIRM YES for the Quest method
:edit:
or I'd settle for the Effective method as well.

Yeah shure. Good idea.

I would like to add something to your suggestion:

Let people become NEUTRAL. That means that they would neither be part of the Horde nor the Alliance. It would be nice not to be forced to support one oppinion, but instead make it on your own. You would ofcourse become neutral after doing specific quests for each faction.

I love this idea, and am glad it got beyond the minute bickering of
"i want this in"
"no way,thats soo stupid,bad idea,you are retarded"
and someone actually got it ogranized, good job.
I am very much for this feature, it could add to the flavor, and help friends in real life who are too stubborn to switch sides but still want to group.
Like everyone, Ix got sick of dwarves joking "hows the weather up there?",and so Ix become a shaman and showed them firsthand...

Changing factions is a bad idea that would screw up things horribly.

Undead, Paladins, and many other things have no right whatsoever to change factions. It would screw up the storyline that has been layed fourth. This isn't one of those gay MMORPGs where the players make up the story, but rather the developers do. The factions must be kept in place to keep the story flowing properly.

Example: Why would a Human want to help the Undead, whom wants to kill all of Humanity and other living things?

To this and similiar posts,

Some of you are judging based on Warcraft 3 and your assumptions about how the game should be, but there are precedents on this subject already...

A lore lesson, for the not-so-hardcore fanboys:

In Warcraft 2, both sides had a mission where they had to deal with traitors. The Orcs had to kill Gul'dan and Cho'gall and their Stormreaver and Twilight's Hammer clans, which had left the Horde to seek out the tomb of Sargeras. Sargeras, a demon (woah, you mean like the ones in Warcraft 3? ...), promised great power to Gul'dan if he could be freed from his tomb prison. Yea, that's the same Gul'dan whose skull was used to close the Great Portal in Warcraft 2's expansion (um, why am I seeing pictures of it in WoW?), and the one you search for in Warcraft 3.

On the Alliance side, the weakest human nation, Alterac, sided with the Horde when the war had been going poorly. If you consult an original Warcraft 2 manual (not BNE), you can see the concept art of Alterac's flag, containing the insignia of the Horde. Eventually, the Alliance discovered Alterac's treachery and was forced to raze the capital, and slay Alterac's commander, Lord Perenolde.

Going back even further to Warcraft 1, we recall that the portal was first conjured by the insane sorceror Medivh, who had betrayed his mother, the Matriarch of Trisfal, who had guarded the ignorant human nations for a thousand years from the Twisted Nether and its demonic powers. He was slain by human knights in his tower.

After the Orcs' initial victory in Azeroth (Warcraft 1), Blackhand the Destroyer was slain by one of his most powerful and trusted generals, Orgrim Doomhammer, who then took command of the Blackrock clan and the title War Chief of the Horde.

Any of you who thinks treachery is an alien concept to Warcraft seem to lack a grasp of its roots.

Humans helping the Undead... sounds like Cultists to me, I'm reminded of a certain Warcraft 3 peon-level unit...
